Pomp. And Circumstance.

Thursday afternoon, Jim and I attended Julia’s high school commencement ceremony. What a beautiful sight to behold – an auditorium of young adults, full of hope and promise, brimming with enthusiasm and beaming with pride. We watched as each student crossed that stage to a soundtrack of cheers, whistles, applause and the occasional cowbell. We could not have been more proud to witness Julia receiving her diploma, her trademark sunny smile and dimple visible even from our distant vantage point. What a moment to relish! What a memory to treasure!

"C" Sickness


A precious friend sent these words to me recently.

It was a beautiful day at “C” when her text message arrived. The “C” was calm and gentle. There were no visible clouds on the horizon. A soft breeze blew – enough to remind us that we were drifting a bit at “C”, but not enough to create more than soft ripples in our life pool. It was smooth sailing, so-to-speak. And so I had – and took - the time to read, reread, absorb and thank her for these words, humbled that they had brought me to her mind.

But the “C” is fickle. And vast. And powerful. A squall can arise without warning, knocking one’s nascent “C” legs out from under. And a few days later, it did just that.

Reality Bytes

New normal.

This cliché is how our society has come to describe that which goes from the extraordinary to the everyday, from cataclysmic to commonplace, from shock to surrender. It epitomizes how we work to incorporate an apocalyptic event into our average lives to establish a new reality that can be both lived with and lived within.

This cliché is our life.
