Countdown

Every time we near the end of a treatment phase, Jim and I are handed the next page in the leukemia playbook. There it is, in impossibly small and deceptively tidy black and white print: the names of the drugs, their routes of administration, the dosage, the days that each is to be given, and the timing of requisite assessment studies. At the top of the page, in slightly larger bolder print, is the name of the phase as ordained by the Children’s Oncology Group, with the parenthetical (and for Callen, generally hypothetical) number of days to be spent in each. Induction (35). Consolidation (56). Interim Maintenance (63). Jim, upon completion of each of these three phases, has renamed them the “It Sucks”, “It Really Sucks”, and “It Totally F---ing Sucks” phases. And while perhaps less scientific or “appropriate”, I have to agree that his monikers have been far more representative of the actual experience.

But this last one? Oh, they nailed it.

'Nuff Said

Anyone who has ever spent significant time with Callen has surely experienced one of his incredible monologues. Much to his delight, our amusement, and the frustration of anyone trying to get a word in edgewise (i.e. Olivia), he will deliver a running narrative on everything – and I do mean everything! – that is running through his head (and body). His is an express line from mouth to brain, sans filter, as only a 4 year-old can do… or at least do and get away with!

His intended audience is generally himself- a future politician, perhaps? - but anyone within earshot of his perpetual “outside voice” is treated to a soliloquy of the inner workings of a child’s mind. From the sweet (“I love you more than I love fresh underwear.”) to the savory (“My feet smell like pancake batter!”), if he is thinking it or doing it, he is talking about it!

ASKed & Answered

Earlier this month I was nominated to speak at the ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation’s “Jangling on the James” fundraising event. The designated topic? A parent’s perspective of how ASK impacts families coping with their child’s cancer diagnosis. In under five minutes. To a target audience of potential supporters and donors. Without having an emotional breakdown in front of hundreds of people. (OK, so that last directive was self-imposed, but it certainly seemed appropriate and necessary to successfully carrying out the appointed mission.)

Could I effectively yet succinctly script -let alone deliver- a summation of their incalculable contributions to our family?
